Garran opened his eyes so wide to reach the point of bad manners, and promptly recomposed himself before anyone noticed.
Magic? What the... He got caught off guard by that. That story about otherwordly travels and magic, to justify some pointed ears, seemed too made up. An officer surely would be able to tell a better lie.
He remained straight-faced, thinking. Better not to dig deep in that story. It wouldn't be polite.

Unless...
His mother once said "that's too stupid to be a lie". Would that be the case?
A mixture of feelings slowly rose within him. Disbelief, as as a man of science he had always deemed the whole thing a "cool fairytale". Discomfort to imagine something that couldn't be under his control. Excitement, as he considered the possibility that magic was real, and the feeling of a future disappointment in discovering that Hector's story was a blatant lie.

There was that feeble voice within his heart that kept saying "what if..."

Doctor Sylvian Greymyst had, for the most part, after the general assembly gone back to the Medical Tent to oversee that the facility was ready for the recruits who would wander in with injuries. It was a common training hazard, especially in the Military branch, to come in with at least a sprained wrist, or at worst a broken arm or leg when someone got a little too into beating their opponent with a training staff. Such things happened, but what he was really preparing for was R&D accidents, which happened almost as often, or perhaps more often, than the Military training accidents. Something about unstable material and flux capacitors.

Okay, so he was mostly joking on that part. But you never know with R&D. Honestly, the worst he was expecting was burns, scraps, and the occasional temporary blindness when something spontaneously went *poof* in a flash of light. He was able to do this, go back to the Medical Tent, because Lady Bane was overseeing the first leg of the examinations for fresh R&D recruits. She was a good judge of character, and knew more about the Research part of R&D than the Grey Wolf Doctor could ever hope to know, and she had that warm and cuddly feeling about her.

Okay, so she scared people senseless if they made her angry, but he was sure that no one would be stupid enough to do that! Right? Right...?

Pulling a pocket watch out of a, well pocket, he opens it and looks at the time. Frowning he realizes its lunch time, actually lunch was about to end! Closing his watch he looks around the tent again, going through his mental checklist of how things need to look, and finds it acceptable for the time being. Small burns and other training accidents will be well cared for her, and short of a full on disaster the medical staff can handle themselves fine on their own without the Doctor looking over their shoulders.

Grabbing his clipboard on the way out, he walks off towards the Mess Tent, his stomach grumbling at him somewhat disapprovingly at his continual habit of forgetting to eat on time. But, sometimes you had to skip meals to make sure everything was in order, the patient did not wish you to have to dig through piles to find their medical chart, or a piece of equipment that can treat their burn or broken arm. Or, heavens above forbid, you had to find something life saving! Everything had to be in its proper place, its proper order, or nothing in Medical would work.

Walking into Mess he grabs a tray, and puts some meat (Mostly fish, its an island so fish) and some salad and vegetables. He also grabs some warm water and pulls a tea bag out of a breast pocket, because he always carries tea on him, and puts the teabag into the water. Looking around he frowns slightly, looking for a place to sit. Spotting a couple familiar faces, namely Hector, Artemis, and surprisingly Doctor Silver, he smiles and starts over. They are speaking, it seems, to a few recruits for R&D, which makes this an even more prudent choice of place to sit.

Tea in one hand, tray in the other, and clipboard under his arm he smiles warmly, eyes happy behind his bifocals, "Would there perhaps be a free seat for a fellow patron of Research and Development?" his tone is, as always warm and open as he turns his eyes to Silver while he waits for a response, "Doctor Silver, it is a pleasant surprise to see you," He smiles, "As well as you too Hector, Artemis." He inclines his head to the other two, "I do hope you are feeling better, Silver? And you as well Hector. I trust the local stills are already finding use?"

Archeus finished with her notes, and gathered her empty plates to return them. As she did Archeus noticed doctor Sylvian taking a seat at the next table. She walked over to the table of R&D group. "I say friends, room for one more?"

As the command was given, Eddie moved the lance as instructed. He didn't quite get the timing entirely right the first time, but soon got a much better hang of it. He had never thought he'd be a formal ... anything, really. He was a bit nervous about that, but focused on following orders as closely as he could manage. Admittedly, he found his group's display to be fairly impressive, and was also glad to be a part of it.

Tigermark watched with a critical eye. In formal escort mode, everything had to be precise. After a few times, the four recruits were moving in exact unison. He dropped the count and just gave the command a few more times, and they held the timing very well.

"Very good. Remember most of the time if you're performing an escort or honor guard, it will be for show. However, as things go in service to the Overlord, a calm routine escort can turn into a battle with little or no notice. You'll find it easy to recover to the ready position from any of the carry positions."

"There is a left shoulder lance command and move, but we only use it if we're on honor guard escorting the body of a fallen minion. To execute this move, you go from the ready position. On the command, at count one, you move your right hand up to just under your left and grip the lance. On two you move your left hand down and cup the butt plate. On three you put the lance to your left shoulder. On four, your right hand goes down. be aware that the lance points should be front to back in a line with your shoulder. If they're side to side, you'll smack yourself in the face with the right one when you put the lance to your shoulder. IF you are on a funeral honor guard, the right hand does not come down. It stays on the lance, across your heart, as a sign of respect for the fallen."

"We'll only go through this one a few times. As I said, we don't use the left shoulder carry very often."

"Ready, LEFT shoulder, Lance, One..two..three..four."

He listened hard what the commander did say and in his mind performed the what he was told.
when the Tigermark called for it he tryed his best and moved the lance and his hand as instructed.

Keir listened intently as the instructions flowed forth. He did the slowly at first. He caught himself in the face as the lance spun in his handpaw due to the transfer between handpaws. Grumbling, Keir righted the lance and then continued with the rest of them following the orders and other minions closely, making sure to not spin the lance too much during the hand off.

Fallen minions? Well, that struck a cord with shark, causing his movements to fumble slightly. He was quick to recover, getting back on count with the others, but his mind wandered.

As much as he didn't like it, he could potentially have to do this for one of his fellow recruits here....heck, they may have to do it for him some day if he kicked the can during service. It was...scary to think about honestly, but then again...that's how life was. He enjoyed the company of his new friends, and it physically hurt him to think about how he would deal with losing any of them. Yeah, they'd only known each other about two days, some even less than that, but he felt like he'd formed some semblance of comradeship in that short time.

Razor huffed. This was no time to get emotional about what MIGHT happen in the future. He needed to focus on the here an now, especially since he almost smacked himself in the face the with the lance. Dang it.

Lex watched the recruits in their drills. It was difficult with how she had to just use her eyes and ears, trying to leave her body absolutely still. She thought to herself, "Well at least one thing I might not be good at. I may enjoy the outdoors, but that..." she thought about the maneuvers.

"Good afternoon, doctor Sylvian. It's a pleasure to meet you again."

It was nice. That was becoming a condominium meeting. It was only missing... "Archeus! Here you are! Come with us, let's have a seat." Garran exclaimed merrily, and moved a bit to make room for her. Then, lowering his voice "How did your examination go?" He didn't want to talk about that right in front of Silver. It would not be polite, both for him and Archeus. He just wanted a "good or bad" answer.

"Okay, enough of that. We've only had to use that carry a very few times before. There is one more formal carry position. Since you all seem pretty familiar with military procedure already, you might recognize. The command is 'Present Arms.' In this case, the command will be Present, Lance.
First, return to Right Shoulder. Use your right hand to lift the lance off your left shoulder, then switch hands in opposite order of what you did before. Then put it back on the right shoulder. This is the starting position for Present Lance. At the command, you lift the lance off your shoulder with your left paw. Hold it out in front of you so that both elbows are at about a 45 degree angle. The right hand stays holding the butt cap, and the left holding the lance straight up and down, parallel to your body. The command is two part. At the command, "Present," snap your left hand to the lance. Wait for the next part until it is called. At the command, "Lance," Snap the lance out into position. This is how you salute when carrying a lance. It is used as part of an honor ceremony, and also if guarding a VIP area when someone of rank or importance approaches or leaves. If you're ever charged with that duty, you'll be given time to coordinate the timing of salute and return between the two guarding the area."

"Now, Right shoulder, Lance."

"Ready, Pre-seeent.......Lance!"

Vince remained seated next to his collection of food and near where Shard sat and Lex stood at attention. His position gave him a good view of the drilling recruits and he had to admit that how quickly they synchronized their movements impressed him. He doubted he would have been able to do so nearly as well. For the time being, he contented himself following the orders Commander Steele had given preceding his brief lunch break - namely to sit and await further orders from either the Commander himself or Lieutenant Areta upon her return.

Keir moved the lance with incredible accuracy, making sure to swing the lance wide around his muzzle to avoid contact. THAT would be a nasty surprise if the lance was charged. He leaned the weapon against his right shoulder, and upon the Commander's orders, he snapped the lance to the correct positions, checking the degrees were correct and to the 'T'.

"This isn't so bad. I kind of like this. And to think I may get to be an escort or something of the sort, that will be exciting!" Keir thought to himself.

Glad to have finished the previous somber procedure, Eddie snapped the lance into the proper positions on Tigermark's command. He thought to himself that sometimes, someone had to do all these procedures, so he might as well learn it. Also the idea of having tasks that required good timing seemed significantly less daunting after today's training.

After the somber moves they did before Angus tryed his best to match the new lance moves with his comrades and smiled actually somehow it was fun to exercise these moves and get in tune with his new friends.

Listening to the commands, Razor followed them slowly at first before catching on quickly with the maneuver. Honestly, he didn't find it nearly as fun as PT, but it was part of the deal and he wasn't about to make a fool of himself because he didn't know proper protocols.

Wish sharp movements, he presented his lance to the white tiger. It wasn't nearly as exact as Keir's movements, but the effort was at least there.

"Very good, recruits. I only noticed one thing, but I didn't say this before, so no harm. When the lance is on your shoulder, you correctly had the prongs perpendicular to the line of your shoulders. When you bring the lance out, also rotate it so the prongs are parallel to the line of your shoulders. In other words, when I'm looking at you, I should see the prongs side by side, not one behind the other. Let's try it a couple more times."

"Right Shoulder, Lance."

"Pre-seeeent.....Lance!"

The movements got a bit trickier but somehow Angus managed them after some trying. He feeled really proud of himself to catch on so fast

After a few tries, Keir had gotten the lance correctly placed where it should be every time. Now that this was getting easier, he was curious as to what was coming up next and if he and Angus would get the chance to talk to Sunny again before the day was over. Keir looked at Tigermark, awaiting the next order.

Tigermark allowed a slight smile to cross his muzzle. These four were pretty quick studies, so they'd picked up the lance movements very well. Now that they had it, and were all doing so well with the training, he had one more thing to address and then he'd let them take a break.

"Very good, guys. Now, one more thing. Saluting. I notice a lot of recruits try it, but they're uncertain about how and when to do it. The forces of The Overlord aren't in general as strict as a regular military. Salutes are not usually exchanged. When reporting to a superior, they simply stand at attention and report when acknowledged. To the Overlord, and only to her, we bow, as she is royalty. The exception of course is when you're on guard and do the Present Lance you just learned."

"Now, in the Military branch, we do salute. We salute when reporting to a superior, and when passing in revue while unarmed. The salute is a simple hand salute, right hand straight, bring it up about level, touching the forehead just above the right eyebrow. the motion is quick, but very controlled. Up, touch, down. When reporting, hold it up until the superior acknowledges you, then quickly down."

"When reporting, stop at attention in front of the superior, salute up, say, 'Sir, Private (or whatever your rank is) So-and-so reporting.' After they acknowledge, drop the salute and state your business. I've seen you do something similar enough to know you all have it. If you doubt it, see if you're doing it right in the mirror when you have a chance. For now though, thirty minute break. Don't wander off, but relax a bit. After break, I'll be talking to you about wear of the uniform. Dismissed."

Hector took note of the stares of disbeleif but could only smirk in response. If they ever ran afoul of Fenriria, his sister. They'd learn the hard way how real his story was. "Well enough about me at any rate. I'm sure Doctor Silver has more interesting ideas anyway." Silver gave Hector the eye but decided against poking the Elf in the ribcage.

"Well since the majority of us are going to be working together in R&D if any of you have any questions about the department, our technology, or our capabilities I'll be happy to answer them before we finish lunch and go back to start on the group projects." He smiled as he looked up at Sylvian. "Oh yes! please do take a seat, things were just about to get interesting."

Now, doctor Silver was eager to give explanations. What could he possibly ask? There were so many subjects... so many questions!
"Thank you, sir. I guess a survey on everything would be long enough to keep everyone busy until midnight." he addressed Silver with a grin. "So... I'm really curious about the medical extent of the Overlord. Technology, in particular. What is the medicine here capable of?"
That was a thing that stimulated his curiosity. Being a physicist he wasn't really aware of the medical side of science.

"Aye Commander," Keir said as he looked over to the other recruits and smiled. He gripped his lance and leaned it against his shoulder. Saluting was going to be interesting to remember. A question popping into his head, Keir turned back to face Tigermark.

"Excuse me Commander, but what exactly does 'revue' mean?" Keir asked of him.

Lex remained still for the time, while the other two operations recruits waited, hardly averting her gaze as she stood with her collected fruits, herbs, and roots. However her hearing was an advantage to her waiting, taking the time overhearing Commander Tigermark's instructions regarding the salute and behavior of the recruits. She took mental note of what words of his she could hear, filing them away for future reference. Otherwise she would look at Commander Steele and watch his movements and expressions.
