Vince found the fruit salad quite good, if not entirely familiar. There was one fruit it whose flavor he couldn't quite place, even after locating the pieces of fruit possessed of the new flavor. It was a bit like guava, but not quite. Perhaps it belonged to a plant native to Aukate and not to Tiunu, or at least not to the area of the island he was most familiar with. The fish was a treat. The spiced grasshoppers, though, were more sharply spiced than he had hoped for, and the bear found himself resorting to his mug of tea to help clear his palette. The candied crickets, too, proved... interesting. They were glazed with what, if Vince had to guess, seemed like the crystallized sap of some of the local flora. Meal complete, the bear carried his tray back and scraped the leftover scraps, including the remaining spiced grasshoppers, into the compost bin, though not without an apologetic glance at the cook-staff currently on duty.

Lex would subtly shift her weight from one paw to another. In the uncertainty of the moment, she shifted her arms from her sides to crossing her wrists behind her back. Uncertain of how her comments would be taken, considering that she hadn't had enough experience with the commander to have a proper barometer for his reactions. He seemed like one of the tougher customers she had worked for, and yet not so much. The military command attitude and behavior was something she did not know enough to be able to predict. And perhaps, she didn't realize just what she was requesting, at least in the forms of military or guard types of protocol.

Either way, it seemed as though the long pause did make her nervous, question if she should have been so bold, and unsure that it was a good idea to return to the commander's tent. But she was here and it was too late to take it back now, so she wouldn’t flinch. Her eyes watched the Commander, trying to analyze his motions and trying to gauge him like one would gauge another player in a high stakes poker game. But, true to his name, Steele had a good poker face for the most part, as far as she could tell.

Finding a uniform wasn't a problem. The gecko lady directed Devon to a selection of them, since he had no special anatomy to work around. Most of them were too large, but he managed to find one that fit, even though he had to squint to check the sizes. Before long, he was dressed in his new clothes, a nervous feeling of excitement starting to take over him as he looked himself over.

This was it. His old life was over. No more school, no more boring lectures, no more homework, no more bullying from his brothers... no more pilfered supplies, no more secret projects, no more wandering off to do as he pleased...

Costs and benefits. That's how he had to see it. He'd lost a lot coming here, maybe even some promising grants for his research. The Overlord might demand patents to his inventions as well, if they proved useful. His life was no longer his own; Steele had made that clear. Yet it was unlikely his brothers would join as well. He almost wished they would, just so he could see them encounter Steele. He chuckled at the thought of them being cut down to size by the General. Yes, this was a harder life than he would like, and he might have to give up on his dreams for a while. But if he could prove to the Overlord his worth, he would be running the dungeon soon enough. And if it involved pain and transformation in the process, so be it. He knew his designs could work. All he had to do was earn the right to show them to the world.

Stepping out of the uniform tent, his eyesight almost clear, he looked a sight happier now, walking to his tent to drop off his civilian clothes and an extra uniform (seeing as others seemed to be doing the same), his heart full of hope for the future. But the future could wait. The mess tent had some very good smells coming from it, and he still needed to track down his benefactor and return the flask. If he didn't repay kindness shown to him, he would never last in this outfit.

Personal discomfort aside, these were cook-staff. If all went well, Vince would be working with them eventually. He approached one of them, a dark-furred panther who seemed to have a momentary pause in his duties. Vince inquired of him if he had seen a terrapin come through yet today. When the reply came in the negative, Vince thanked the tall feline. The recruit he was looking for would have to come through here for food eventually. Maybe he could just wait? Then again, the camp didn't seem huge from his observations coming from the ship, so actively searching for this James Wilson wasn't out of the question either.

Darius appraised Lex for a good long while. "I think for the time being base operatives would be suitable for you. You don't seem to be cut out for the military given your lack of discipline and respect. Should Lieutenant Areta inform me otherwise, we'll go from there. You'll be reporting to her tomorrow morning. Your weapons will stay with me and be returned to your family, they have no place here nor where you will be going. DISMISSED! Bring in the next recruit on your way out."

Lex was about to question Steele, but caught herself before letting words tumble out her mouth.  She wasn’t sure what to expect, and she wasn’t sure what he would expect.  Overall, not everyone was necessarily familiar with the military, and she was among that number.  She wasn’t sure what she could do for operations but she supposed that was for Lieutenant Areta to decide, she supposed.  But it would be somewhat easy to spot in her eyes that among the confiscated items was at least one item she didn’t want to part with.  Considering it was something she used frequently for years, was hand crafted and given to her by her father, it had sentimental value.  But she decided it was not a time to ask about that.

She closed her eyes for a moment as she gave a half bow, “Yes sir,” she said, sounding a little dejected, as though her previous despondent thoughts during the pause had been confirmed.  She turned, exited through the tent’s flap, and over to Commander Tigermark as the others had before.  She noted that she didn’t receive a slip of paper like some of the others who had left the commander’s tent previously, and didn’t know what exactly what those were for.

She would stand to attention for Commander Tigermark, “Commander Steele would like the next recruit sent in,” she would say, nodding towards Archeus.  She made no other mention about any further orders, as she hadn’t been given any further, however she stood at attention for the time being, incase Commander Tigermark had his own or his own questions.

Darius cursed, he'd forgotten the assignment and grabbed it from her file poking Tigermark gently in the back with it as he reached through the tent. "Forgot to give her this, make sure she gets her uniform." He sighed a little and bade Archeus within the tend, forcing a smile despite his exhaustion, and scanned the line for Sunny. "Miss Sunday, if it wouldn't be too much trouble to fetch me something of substance from the mess tend I'd much appreciate it. Perhaps some bread or use your discretion."

"I'm from 'Okotopa" he replied. "which island are you from?"

Ian turned as the commander came into view and spoke to Sunny. After he had finished speaking, Ian turned back to Sunny. "Well, it was nice meeting you Sunny, but it sounds like you have a matter to attend too. I'll be seeing you around later I suspect" He said with a smile.

Tigermark was about to send Recruit Lexaniri on with the standard instructions when he felt someone poke him in the back. He flipped an ear back in that direction in time to hear Darius' words, so he put a paw behind himself and felt the slip of paper the Camp Commander put in it. Darius then called to Sunny and then called Recruit Archeus in.

Tigermark simply nodded to the tall winged tigress and turned his attention to Lexi.

"At ease, Recruit Lexaniri, here's your assignment slip. Now, go get your uniforms and stow your gear. Your tent assignment is on the slip as well. After that go get something to eat. The Uniform Tent is right over there. You can't miss it, there's a sign over the entrance. Dismissed."

Post by Akkarri Sat Dec 14, 2013 3:20 pm

Lex didn’t know much about the military way other than what she had read about, and most of that would have been the command, not the action. So her stance remained the same, unsure of what “at ease” meant in military terms. Besides she didn’t look much the part anyway. She would take the slip of paper when Commander Tigermark handed it to her.

“Thank you, sir,” she said as she watched him indicate where to go next. Her tail remained slowly moving behind her, but even though it was more for balance, it seemed to move a little more stiffly than most. “Thank you sir,” she responded once he had dismissed her and moved towards the uniform tent.

She entered the uniform tent quietly and looked across the uniforms. She wasn’t sure if they’d have any that would fit her, being of a tall thin build. Catching eye of the gecko who ran the tent she’d give a weak smile “I’m here for a uniform,” she said, seeming to use a strange choice of words. But after a little while they had found something that worked, and Lex waved as she went to the tents to find her own bunk. “Well… at least it’s better than a hammock or setting up my own tent,” she thought as she eventually found her bunk.

She sighed as she decided to take her time with stowing any gear out of her pack, not that there was much left after Darius had confiscated most of her tools, and out of what was provided. A knapsack, some flint and tinder, a bit of her own field rations (Dried and spiced meats, along with an assortment of other foodstuffs), a couple old books, a change of clothing that didn’t look much different than what she was wearing. Mostly the impersonal items that one used, or had use for, nearly Spartan in nature. In fact, for her to not have the rest of her gear, she felt as though she was more vulnerable than usual. But she did pause for a time thinking of if she should go and eat or not really. She had that bit she had in her pack, and it didn’t seem that she was having much luck today with anyone in authority. She gave a shallow laugh about that, and what she could imagine happen further. But nothing for it, it seemed. If it happened, it happened. She changed out of her leathers and into the uniform. A little snug in places, but nothing near as bad as fresh and unconditioned leather. She gave a sigh and moved to leave the tent to move out to the mess, and hopefully not make a mess of things.

Tigermark smiled at the very well-executed position of attention and salute from the tall winged tigress. He stood to attention and returned the salute.

"Well done, Recruit Archeus. Yes, your turn to go in. I'll see you when General Steele is finished with you. Go on in."

He watched the the recruit enter the tent and turned his attention back to the line of remaining recruits, which was finally dwindling down the the last few.

Darius folded his hands and appraised the Tigress. "At ease recruit..." He waited for her stance to relax, thumbing through her file with a ponderous look, finally he pulled out the slip of paper he'd given to all the recruits before and handed it to her. "This is your tent assignment, says here you like science and such, you'll be a lovely fit for research and development. Be sure to visit the tent sometime tomorrow morning and report to the officer in charge, they'll no doubt assess you further there. Commander Tigermark will direct you to the uniform tent and you can get settled in. DISMISSED!"

Archeus standing at ease listened intently to the General's direction. After which she gave a reserved yet courteous smile and noded. "Yes Sir! Thank you General" Returning to full attention she places her right paw behind her and executes an about face. With measure and intent she exits the tent. She proceeded to commander Tigermark. She waits to be acknowledged at which point she returned to attention. "Commander! " She extends her arm and presents the commander with the slip of paper. "Per the General. Sir." She then takes one step back and stands at the ready.

Post by Akkarri Wed Dec 18, 2013 1:33 am

Lex sighed as she went through the line at the mess tent, working her way through the potential selections.  Meat, insects, Fish (some of which she was sure she had shot), and a selection of various flora for those with that taste.  Eventually she would find her way through the line, having some fish, a little bit of light vegetable matter, and took her time with selecting to try find something sweet.  Nothing like something to satisfy a craving for sweet after a long day.  After that and getting some more water, she found an unoccupied seat to sit down and examine her meal a little more closely.  Pushing some of the fish about, she could find the tell-tale signs that it was one she had shot earlier in the day, so she knew it was fresh.  She did take a little time poking it, seeing how it was prepared a bit more closely.  Food preparation wasn’t necessarily of huge interest to her, but it was something that made her curious and would be good to know of any alterations she’d like later on.  But she did spend a little while pushing various items around her tray for a short time, hungry, but curious.

Tigermark heard the tent flap open and saw the winged tigress step around, where she stood to attention. He acknowledged her and she presented him with her assignment slip. He glanced at it and returned it to her.

'Thank you, recruit, but you need that. It has your tent assignment on it, and which division you're assigned to. Go get your uniforms, two should do to start, right over there at the tent with the sign over the door. Then go find your tent and stow your gear. The tents are down that way. Then go get something to eat. DISMISSED."

Tigermark had pointed out each place he mentioned, looking back to make sure the recruit understood where to go.

As she turned to go, Tigermark added, "With those wings, I hope to see you in flight training later, Recruit Archeus."

Acknowledging the commander, "Thank you Sir! About that, if you have a second. I was brought up in a military home. Plus I had honor of being the runt of the family, my brothers insured my life was not easy. And although I've been assigned R&D I have no intentions of limiting myself to just that department. I enjoy a good fight as much as anyone. I'll go where I'm needed. I would honored to serve in the Air Corp." Archeus nods, gives a polite bow. She then :gives a salute before exiting.

Tigermark returned the tigress' salute and watched her briefly as she walked away toward the Uniform Tent. He then turned his attention back to the next recruit in line. The coyote mix looked a bit grimy around the edges but did look eager.

"Recruit, you're next, go in as soon as General Steele calls for the next recruit."

He then thought a moment about the tigress' parting words. Runt of the family?

"Good grief! She's well over seven feet tall, and she's the runt? What do they feed them on her home island," he mused to himself.

With the days main events over Archeus visited the uniform tent to get her uniform. The Gecko lady was most helpful with the 3X suit.
She then went to her tent to unpack. Stowing numerous binders and note books. "Jeesh, no matter where I go tons of paper" Her personals put away she grabbed a brass polishing out of her briefcase and polished all the buttons on her attire before calling it quits.

Having idled about the mess for a bit, Vince decided if he were to stay around here, he might as well get a bit more familiar with the other recruits. He would be working with them after all. The bear glanced around the tables, looking for one where he could sit and still see the entrance so as to notice the terrapin when he arrived. He approached the table slowly, as it was already in use by a... well, he wasn't quite sure what her species was, though from what he could see from here she somewhat resembled a rabbit. "Is this seat taken?" he asked, indicating the spot across the table from her.

Lex eventually finished pushing around and investigating her food for a bit, and started to eat a bit of the fish. It was good, though a bit fancier than her usual fare. “Still nothing like fire cooked fresh,” she thought to herself as she ate a few bites. Eventually her eating was interrupted as the bear approached and inquired about the seat. She swallowed, wiped her mouth lightly, and offered a smile, “No, it’s yours if you’d like,” she indicated as she adjusted herself in her seat using a paw to straighten her uniform at least some. It would take a little while getting used to dressing differently. “I’m Lex, and you are?” she asked. She had saw him about the camp in a few places, but she hadn’t had a chance to talk to most of the recruits just yet.

Post by Charon Bond Thu Dec 19, 2013 11:05 pm

Charon smiled at the female gecko as he saw she was busy with other recruits and their special alterations to their uniforms. All he wanted was a comfortable uniform with a tail hole. He flipped through the tops and found one which he thought might fit him and through the pants they offered, it was certainly a wide variety. He was rather slim and his waist size was something of a mystery to the amount of food he could eat, he thought it was just the high metabolism of being a feline which would run fast for short distances.
He went behind one of the curtains and changed into his uniform and from what the others were saying about the clothes, they did fit snug. He stretched in several directions and found the uniform moved right with him. He shrugged and exited the small changing room and picked up an extra set just in case. He handed the numbers of the uniforms he had taken to the gecko and departed.
He searched the camp for his tent and found it quite close to ocean which pleased him to no end. He certainly would sleep quite comfortably during his time here. A slight rumbling entered his stomach and seemed to reverberate his entire being. "Shush you, food is on its way," he quietly admonished his stomach as he put away his things and headed towards the mess tent.
It wasn't very far and the smells which came from it enticed him to walk a bit faster. Already, a menagerie of species were partaking of the time honored tradition of lunch. He had missed breakfast because of the storm which passed by and he was famished. He grabbed a tray and went immediately to the sea food section of the buffet style lunch. He saw tuna melt sandwiches and he couldn't help himself. He piled the sandwiches on the tray. He picked up several bottles of water and sat down to begin to eat.

He took the seat opposite Lex. "My name's Vince," the spectacled bear said. With a slightly nervous smile, he continued, "I'm here for base ops, hoping to be on the cook staff eventually. What about you?" The topic seemed safe enough, and it would tell him if he would be seeing more of her as well. Vince ran his thumb idly along the edge of the table. He had already eaten so he didn't have any food to fiddle with, though that was probably a good thing.
